Achievement and School Improvement Planning

Measures of Student Achievement and Success

Students are involved in various contests and expositions to enhance their overall learning, including public speaking and various presentations by small groups of students at assemblies. Monthly assemblies highlight student achievement in their efforts to build a safe and caring environment. Our lobby display case highlights the efforts of students who speak French in their classrooms, the hallways and on the school yard. Every month a class is responsible for presenting a Character Trait. Groups also have the opportunity to present at these assemblies.

Assessment of French acquisition and comprehension in reading occurs throughout the year with formal and informal evaluations; as of grade 2, a similar process occurs in English.

Teachers meet frequently to discuss student achievement and review and refine their teaching practices to enhance student learning through staff meetings and informal meetings with colleagues who might be teaching the same grade or in the same division.

A formal Awards assembly is held at the end of the year where individual students/groups of students are recognized for academic and athletic abilities. All Grade 3 students participate in the Reading, Writing and Mathematics EQAO provincial testing in the spring.

School Improvement Plans and Initiatives

Classroom teachers are providing suggestions for reading, writing and math activities to parents through classroom newsletters or websites and also through the school website. Teachers offer Speaker Series workshops to our community and also host Curriculum Nights. This year our community has had the opportunity to receive Reader Leader Training as well.

We promote positive attitudes within the school through Safe and Caring Schools program, Character Education and anti-bullying initiatives, the use of the agenda, recognition of good deeds, and social skills programs.

We continue to participate in the Early Literacy Program for junior and senior kindergarten students.

We provide on-going professional development for all staff through OCDSB workshops and in-school workshops. As well, staff continue to share information from workshops through a train-the-trainer method with colleagues at staff and division meetings.
